The Purdue women’s soccer team suffered its worst loss since 2006 against No. 25 Penn State on Sunday.

The Nittany Lions (11-5-3, 7-1-1 Big Ten) routed the Boilermakers 4-0 behind a two-goal performance from junior forward Danielle Toney in State College, Pa. Toney scored the game-winning goal in the 13th minute and added another in the 71st. The No. 22 Boilers (10-5-3, 3-3-2 Big Ten) were held to only two shots on goal for the match.

“The reason why they scored a few times (was) because they were really good at playing off the ball,” said sophomore defender Liz Secue, the only Boilermaker to play all 90 minutes. “So even if I was man-marking to (Toney), if she got it, she would just lay it off and they would play it behind me and I was beat. I was stepping to her like I was supposed to, but I was taken completely out of the play.”

Penn State’s third goal was scored in bizarre fashion in the 62nd minute by senior defender Tara Davies, which Purdue head coach Robert Klatte said all but ended the match.

“Penn State scored, and I don’t know how to explain it,” Klatte said. “(Davies) hit a ball on the outside of her foot from the endline, and she effectively chipped (Jenny) Bradfisch in goal and bent it into the back side netting of the goal. It was brilliant if she intended to do it.”

The Boilermakers have never won at Penn State in six tries, and are 1-8-1 all-time against them.

“We played a great team,” Klatte said. “We didn’t take our chances, we didn’t keep enough pressure, and this is the end result of it.”

Senior Jessica Okoroafo, who broke Purdue’s career goals record earlier this week, broke Purdue’s all-time games played record Sunday in her 88th game as a Boilermaker.

The Boilers will now look forward to playing Indiana at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bloomington, Ind. The game is a makeup of an October meeting postponed due to rain.
