Printer-friendly version Purdue crew leads area outreach event, sponsors support local 7K Hunger Hike
Senior Writer Purdue crew members walked their boats through town Sunday to raise money for the hungry. "The boats are pretty heavy, so it was good exercise," said John Johnson, a freshman in the College of Engineering and a member of Purdue crew. He, among others, braved the 80-degree weather to walk seven kilometers to make a difference. The Hunger Hike was presented by Bison Financial Group and involved the Lafayette Urban Ministry, Food Finders Food Bank and St. Tom’s Haiti Mission. Members of the Purdue Student Union Board volunteered at the event. Dave Rusler, a freshman in the College of Engineering and member, walked. The members of crew were the grand marshals and carried their boat, which they called The Shell. "(The Hunger Hike) is a pretty great thing, great outreach for the community. I come from a small town and we never have anything like this," Rusler said. Jenny Powell, a sophomore in the School of Mechanical Engineering, walked. She said, "I’ve lived here in West Lafayette my whole life. Every year my youth group does it so I did it with them again. (The Hunger Hike) is a really good program to raise money for the food pantries. Everyone should do it." After the hike, participants in the Hunger Hike enjoyed hot dogs, cake and music from a live band. David Barnes, a freshman in the College of Engineering and member of Purdue crew, said the Hunger Hike was a great experience and all people should help the hungry in the community.
