The choice to run for any sort of political office is an admirable one, and this year we have three teams who effectively represent the best qualities of our University. While their enthusiasm to serve is appreciated, only Ryan Hatfield and Beth Corrigan possess the leadership skills necessary to make a meaningful and immediate impact in the lives of Purdue Students. When I had the opportunity to ask Mr. Hatfield to simplify his campaign platform in one sentence, he replied:
“What has Purdue Student Government done for you lately?”
Ryan and Beth realize that PSG has not done much of anything for anyone lately and they want to shake things up. With nearly a $100,000 budget funded through tuition money, the student body deserves the right to expect more out of the leadership in student government. Ryan Hatfield was the only fiscally responsible candidate last year when he opposed the B.A.P. student fee, and he continues to be the only fiscally responsible candidate for PSG president this year. Ryan and Beth also support a cheap set price taxi service system which underscores their understanding of the relationship between the city of West Lafayette and Purdue University. This initiative will help the abundant parking problem around Chauncey Hill and the Levee, while also reducing the irrational incentive to drive while intoxicated. Subsequently, both the quality of neighborhoods and the interests of students are protected. Most impressively, their idea for a text message system which recognizes CityBus location is a cutting edge solution that immediately tackles limited housing space on campus by improving transportation for off-campus students.
For these reasons, I ask you to vote for ticket #1, Ryan Hatfield and Beth Corrigan, for student body president and vice president, Tuesday to Thursday at www.getinvolved.purdue.edu.
